Petty’s 2018 Backyard Makeover: Week One
Petty’s 2018 Backyard Makeover: Week One

This summer, Petty’s Irrigation, Landscape and Pest Control held a contest for a Backyard Makeover.

The winning family was the Crains of Tyler, TX – Jamie and Rachel Crain, and their two children. They won a $28,000 custom makeover for their backyard including sod, irrigation, plants and shrubs, outdoor lighting, a grill, some hardscaping – and pest control treatments for a year.

In fact, pest control was the very first service the Crain family received. When Petty’s arrived at the Crain house to let them know they had won, they noticed a mosquito issue right away. They provided an initial professional mosquito treatment – and on the first return visit afterward… no mosquitoes in sight!

Before starting the transformation, Tracy Smith of Petty’s met with the Crains to discuss the plans to proceed. The Crains explained what they envisioned and Petty’s worked with them to develop a plan. Here’s a glimpse of it…

Out With the Old

Before adding the new pieces to produce the backyard the Crain family wants, Petty’s will need to “prepare the canvas.” The old existing shrubs along the house and fence line will be removed to make room for some of the improvements.

In addition, the Crape Myrtle tree in the backyard has to go. It was found to have a white spotty mildew – compounded with scale insects.

In With the New

Tracy said “We’re going to build four or five new landscape beds… and a larger patio off the existing patio.” The plan includes redoing all of the existing irrigation in the backyard to create better hydration for those new beds.

Rich and healthy grass will also be added. The entire backyard will get new Saint Augustine sod.

Let There be Light

“We’re going to light all the trees in their backyard,” said Tracy. “So they have nice soft lights lighting up into the trees.”

The goal for Petty’s Irrigation, Landscape, and Pest Control is to provide the Crains with “a fabulous place to entertain with family and friends, lots of room, lots of beautiful landscape and a place that they can enjoy for a very long time.”
